Be on the lookout for street scams
The Cerritos Sheriff's Station encourages residents to watch out for street
scams that have ripped off at least two individuals in Cerritos for more than
$1,000 this month.
The scammers typically walk up to an individual on the street or near a shopping
center and show them a purse filled with thousands of dollars in cash.
Claiming to have found the purse in the street, the scammer will say he is
willing to split the money legally with the victim in exchange for cash to hire
an attorney.
The victim will then give the scammer more than $1,000 in "good faith money,"
believing the scammer is going to match that money and hire an attorney.
However, the scammer will then disappear with the victim's money.
In addition to the two incidents in Cerritos, similar scams have been reported
in other areas of Southern California.
If you are approached by
someone claiming to have found money that they are willing to split with you, do
not give the individual any money. Instead, contact the Cerritos Sheriff's
Station immediately at (562) 860-0044.
